A Birthday Wish

pizzarustica.jpg

Today is the great Julia Child’s birthday!

To honour this day, Lisa of Champaign Taste is hosting the second annual food blog event to honour the birth of one of the most influential women in food history. Not bad for someone who didn’t start cooking seriously until she was in her 30s!

What else can I possibly say about Julia Child that hasn’t already been said? She was glorious. On her birthday, I wish simply that we would all take a page out of her life book. Let’s get into the kitchen. Let’s cook. Let’s bake. Let’s enjoy!

Ciao!

To celebrate Julia’s birthday this year, I decided to finally try a recipe that I’d had bookmarked for many years. It’s the Pizza Rustica from the book Baking with Julia by Dorie Greenspan. It’s essentially a slightly sweet pie dough that’s stuffed with a ricotta filling dotted with prosciutto and basil. Delicious!

For Julia’s birthday last year, I made Cantuccini.

What a great birthday pie to honor Julia. She truly was the queen of cooking and baking, especially adept at turning ‘mistakes’ into something better…a fallen souffle’ into a rolled omelet comes to mind.
BTW the package arrived. So sweet of you! They look very interesting. Perhaps you’d like some quince when they are ripe? I could send some.

I bet the Pizza Rustico is delicious! I only know Julia by name, should have a go at one of her recipes…

Happy Birthday, darling Julia. You taught me how to cook — page by page — and changed my life.

This looks like it will be a sweet pie but it’s a nice surprise to find out it is savory! Great photo.

I used to watch Julia’s cooking shows with my mom when I was growing up. We would laugh when something didn’t go according to plan and she would have to think on her feet to fix it. I remember she would say “don’t worry about that, no one will see it.” Years later, Saturday Night Live did a skit on her. It’s become a classic. So, to me, Julia Childs has not only been a great teacher and inspiration, but also a source of some smiles :)

Happy Birthday Julia! My mother has two tattered volumes of “mastering the Art of French Cooking” and I learned to cook helping my mom work her way through those cookbooks. Thanks Julia, for the many wonderful meals we had!
The pizza rustico looks fab!!!

Great choice! I did not know of Julia Child until I moved to the US and enjoyed watching her shows once I got here. Made my hair raise up a few times but also made me laugh and fall in love with her larger than life personality.

I’m Italian and pizza rustica is a very traditional dish, especially in the South (where I come from). And Julia really did the best version of it, without changing the flavor!!!!
By the way… I love your blog!
