For the second edition of Magazine Mondays (oooh - this is so exciting!) I decided to finally put the November 2006 issue of Food & Wine magazine out of its misery. This particular issue has been languishing in my magazine basket for almost a year thanks to two recipes that I’ve wanted to try, but haven’t until now.
For starters, I give you one of the most delicious and satisfying soups I’ve had in a long time: Spicy Grain Soup.
While the soup took some time to make (and considerable effort), it was all worth it in the end as I had a filling, warming and completely comforting soup. I also had lots of leftovers, which is great for weekday lunches!
And because one must always end a comforting meal with dessert, I decided to finally make the Double-Chocolate Bundt Cake with Ganache Glaze.
Wow!
You’d think this cake would be very sweet but it’s actually quite subtle in the sweet department. It does, however, pack a big chocolate whollop. I’m glad I finally had the chance to try these recipes.
Here’s hoping you tried some bookmarked recipes of your own. If you did, let me know.
Have a wonderful week everyone!
Ciao!

I love this idea. I am totally on board with this…as soon as I can find and unpack my magazines.
10/22/07 at 12:09 am
That cake looks like it’s just begging to be eaten! I could definitely do with a chocolate wollop
10/22/07 at 4:41 am
Okay I’ve had some yogurt already, which means that I can now have a huge piece of that chocolate cake for breakfast!
I really need to go through my own stacks!

That does it. We just finished the Italian Creme Cake I made for my husband’s birthday (recipe posted). I’m making this chocolate bundt cake today!
Thanks!

I am still procrastinating with my magazines piling up. I better get cracking. You are inspiring me to browse through them again and earmark the ones I’d like to make. The soup and the cake all look very comforting for these cool, short autumn days!!!

That cake is just superb, Ivonne - and the glaze, oh, my!

I love it when I can put a magazine to rest that’s been waiting for me to cook from it. It can take years sometimes:) I’m going to check out that soup recipe…it looks right up my alley.

Beautiful cake.
I did just post a recipe today that I made from one of those little booklets you get in the checkout aisle of the grocery store.
10/22/07 at 11:16 am
Aahh..both of those look delish! I love spicy soups so that looks rather appealing. I have a question - when you’re done making the recipes, do you actually throw them out?
10/22/07 at 11:26 am
That looks like really fabulous soup right now with the fire in the fireplace and the wind blowing crazy! And sure that cake couldn’t hurt anything but the hips!
10/22/07 at 11:44 am
Love this! I might join you sometime. I tried a magnet recipe! And it worked! Hehe.
10/22/07 at 12:20 pm
Looking good! Glad you’re doing this.

Chocolate!!! what I would do to eat a piece of that cake right now! And just looking at the soup makes me feel all warm inside. Another two recipes to add to my list of recipes to make! I managed to bake a Sour Cream Hazelnut Bundt cake from one of my issiues of Cooking Light magazines!
10/22/07 at 2:06 pm
Mmm, that soup looks delicious! Also funny, as I just posted about a soup from Food and Wine that I’d been wanting to make and finally did this weekend (though without connecting it to Magazine Mondays). Their recipes really are excellent–I think this was actually the first thing I’d made from that magazine (hanging my head in shame because I do actually *subscribe* to it, so my cooking-to-magazine-purchase ratio is terrible!). But I’ll have to do Magazine Mondays intentionally next week–it’s a great idea!
10/22/07 at 3:19 pm
I am loving your Magazine Mondays already! I have something to look forward to on Mondays…and this is hard! Thanks!! The cake looks great!!
10/22/07 at 3:44 pm
yay!! second edition of Magazine Mondays!! oooh, that spicy-grain soup and chocolate-bundt cake w/ganache look SPECTACULAR, Ivonne!! :0)
10/22/07 at 7:25 pm
Ivonne - I’m with ya on this. I also have far too many magazines around, but I can’t stop buying them . The TWO times I have made something from a newspaper or magazine article, I have been really happy. One of those times was recent (polla alla diavola). I think I might join you on this from time to time. Your efforts today are glorious.
The question remains, though…Do you toss the magazines afterwards, or do you rip out the articles and recipes you like and file them away?
10/22/07 at 9:08 pm
I made something from Cookinglight magazine and posted it just now!
This chocolate bundt cake is certainly going on my “to bake list”!
10/22/07 at 11:05 pm
I try to make at least 5 bookmarked recipes from my cookbooks in a week…and I’m pretty successful at it too
Just take a look at all the recipes I post….they all come from cookbooks!
10/23/07 at 6:24 pm
I love your idea, I don’t have any magazines to go through, but plenty of cookbooks that I never open lol!
10/24/07 at 1:04 pm
What a great idea - I am also guilty of being a food-pack-rat, with stacks of publications overflowing my shelves (but what if I neeeed them?). You’re an inspiration to us all - in oh so many ways
10/25/07 at 3:15 pm
I do the same things with food magazines. You’ve inspired me to dig some of the old Cook Illustrated out and give some recipes a try.
Oh and your photos are beautiful.
I’m so happy I stumbled on this site!
10/27/07 at 7:14 pm
Oh great..now I can add your magazine recipes to the list of my magazine recipes that I want to try! Lol!
10/29/07 at 6:47 pm
i love your concept for Magazine Mondays! As a career magazine recipe writer it is good to know that people actually are making these dishes that take so much effort to create!
Keep up the good work.
